Method for Packing Apples

Methods of packing fruit has changed over the years including the containers in which they were packed. This collection of photographs were taken by the then Department of Agriculture with the idea of producing a leaflet showing the method of wrapping apples for packing.

They feature a young Leslie Halleen working in the Blue Moon Cold Stores at Pickering Brook, owned by Alec Giumelli. Each apple was placed in a square sheet of tissue paper, the paper folded and twisted, turned over and placed in the wooden case. The packers became very quick at doing this and were able to pack an incredible number of cases in a day.
