Harvey Bus Trip - 15th September 2024
Sunday the 15th September was a stunning day.
The sun was out for a change and there was a gentle breeze for the day ahead.
All packed and ready for the adventure we headed off and our first stop was the Serpentine Falls.
What a splendid sight? Set in the Serpentine National Park the falls were magnificent.
Having arrived early the viewers were able to get a good front line look at the water fall before all the visitors for the day arrived. It was remarkable to see the huge cascade of water over the falls and into the catchment pond below. No swimming in the pool allowed at the moment, but it looked very tempting.
Our morning tea was set up on the grassed picnic area under the trees with the kangaroos nearby, although, we were advised that most of the females had new babies in their pouches and were very timid.
From Serpentine we headed towards Harvey stopping at the Italian Internment Memorial Chapel situated on land that once formed part of the Internment Camp.
The grounds surrounding the Chapel are beautifully maintained and it was just so wonderful to visit and wander.
Most of the travellers were emotionally overwhelmed by the history of the camp and the Internees, also of the loneliness that must have been experienced by these prisoners.
Well done, Harvey Shire for preserving such an important part of our history.
Next stop was the Harvey War Memorial.
Prior bookings had been made with the Stirling Café for lunch, we were pleasantly surprised to have had the inside restaurant reserved for us. It was a real treat.
After lunch everyone was allowed time to wander through the Stirling gardens and the May Gibbs trail. Snippets of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie along the walk.
We then headed towards home and stopped at the Swing Bridge in Pinjarra for afternoon tea. Plenty of chat about the day’s events before we headed home to Pickering Brook.
Once again a big thank you to Roy and Margaret for the donation of their bus and time.
Well done to all the bakers for the delicious morning and afternoon tea.
Watch for the next picnic in April 2025.
