Heritage Photographic Competition 2015
Heritage Photographic Competition 2015 Junior Section
This years Heritage Photographic Competition was expanded to include entries in both a Junior Section and a Senior Section. Although not a lot of entries were received the quality across the entries was exceptionally good. The Judge had a very difficult job trying to decide on the best entries. In some cases it was so close that only the “heritage” component was the deciding factor. Congratulations to the winners on their excellent work and we hope this will encourage you to again enter next year. This annual event is attracting a lot of interest and many favourable comments were made about the exhibits on display at the Karragullen Expo.

"Tree Puller"
This was used to clear fell trees on the land of W. Gordon in Pickering Brook. It could pull a maximum of 24 tonnes by hooking up to a stump, as an anchor, and attaching a cable to the tree to be felled, By working the handle on the puller, the tree was gradually taken to the ground.

"Charcoal Pits"
The pits were in forest land at the end of Merrivale Road, Pickering Brook. The pits were last seen by me about 55 years ago (1960). They were operated by Mr. Charlie Della Franca, who at that time lived in Merrivale Road. The charcoal was used in gas producers fitted to cars, to be used as fuel during WW2.

"Base of Forest Look-out Tower"
These towers were used to spot fires during the summer months over the areas from Pickering Brook to Karragullen and nearby districts. One such tower was at Mount Gungin and another at Mount Dale. This was prior to CALM taking over operations. The base is the only part of the tower remaining at Mt. Gungin.
