1st September Opened 9 O’clock. 8 children enrolled.
3rd September Admitted WANDA SULLIVAN.
15th September Admitted ARTHUR SMITH and JOAN FEAST from Serpentine.
17th September Attainment of children very low, ENID BISDEE and ARTHUR SMITH having but recently left good schools – East Perth and Serpentine – are satisfactory. Placed in Class V. KATHLEEN FEAST, aged 11 and PATRICIA FEAST aged 9, have had very little schooling. Other children had little or none.
22nd September Enrollment 12.
26th September Hot weather brought out snakes. Rabbits and brush Kangaroos prevalent.
21st October Teacher donated 3 books to start a library.
31st October Average attendance = 9.
4th November Dinner hour 12 – 1:30 too long for children living close to the school, so changed afternoon session to 1pm – 3.15pm.
11th November Burning off – thick smokey haze clouded the air. Mr. Sampson M.L.A., donated a book prize – awarded for the most progress/most constant application.
24th November Received word from Department approving change of name from Illawarra to Carinyah.
18th-19th December Teacher absent through meeting with accident,

2nd February School resumed. 4 new children enrolled. Numbers = 10.
23rd February Discussed with parents Mr. Sampson’s idea of taking children for an outing to the river, sea or zoo.
22nd March (Sunday) Children of locality visited the zoo with parents. Mr Sampson contributed one pound (two dollars) towards cost of conveyance.
17th April A delightful fine day. The children were taken for a Nature Study walk in the direction of the creek. The whole landscape bathed in beautifully mild sunshine operated wonderfully on the spirits of the children.
27th April Admitted CLARE and LESLEY HARRIS and LYN SLEIGHT. Enrolment = 15, 10 girls and 5 boys. Note: KATHLEEN and PATRICIA FEAST often unwell; WANDA SULLIVAN, ARTHUR SMITH also. FEAST children, including ARTHUR, often late.
11th September LARRY HALL arrived late, in the afternoon – marked absent.
5th October Admitted PHILIP and LYN SLEIGHT.
A year has passed since the openning of the school. Of all the subjects taught, English Composition presents the most difficulty. To improve the children’s powers of expression, a story, or if possible, several stories, will be told to the children every day, so as to unconsciously instil in their minds, the power and the beauty of good language. After much thought upon this subject, and from observation as well as experience, this way of teaching appears to be the simplist and the most natural, as the ear is a quicker and more pleasenter way to the child’s mind than the eye.
12th October KATHLEEN KEELAN took sick – sent home.
2nd November The work of the children still shows a steady and pleasing improvement. The progress made in reading especially noticeable. If this progress, as it is hoped, continues, the children should arrive at more than an ordinary efficiency in the subject. With the assistance of a library of well-selected books to enrich their imagination, widen their vocabulary, and develop a sense of style and beauty in language, it is expected that these children, when they leave school, will have acquired a penetrating and judicious judgement, as well as a comprehensive and well-disposed mind.
20th November Dr. Stang visited and examined the children – took the wrong turn on leaving. I followed and caught her on my motor-bicycle, and directed her along the proper road: absent about 20 minutes.
4th December JEAN HEELAN arrived 10.40am – marked absent.

5th September Commission on Saving Bank Deposits = 2/6d from Commonwealth Bank expended on library books: “Old Peter’s Russian Tales”, “Kidnapped”, and “Alone on an African Swamp”. Teacher made several comments on the improvement in the children’d work, reading etc.
23rd November No drill taken on account of some of the children leaving their hats at home.

24th July Work progressing well; some children showing a great promise of becoming “lovers” of great literature; they can distinguish good from bad passages of writing.
14th August Death of District Inspector Mr THOMAS – he taught several of the parents.
18th September Teacher gives a lyrical descripyion of the taste for good literature.
7th November VERONICA FEAST refused to work, so was placed outside; shen then went home – “If the attitude of this child does not improve, severe measures will have to be taken, as she is setting a bad example to the younger children.”
8th November VERONICA FEAST very penitent – ” began work with a will. It is a pity that the number and ages at this schooll do not permit of a full programme of outdoor sports, as this girl shows great partiality for sports of all description. She is really a good girl and it is only at times that she becomes restive,”

20th May Admitted JOHN (Std. 6) and DAPHNE (Std. 3) HUDSON from Roleystone. WANDA SULLIVAN marked off roll as she is living in Perth for several months.

24th May Empire Day; Mr O’KEEFE made his wireless set available for the children to hear the broadcast.
24th June STAN TONKIN attending for a fortnight; his name is not included on the roll.
4th July LAWRENCE WHITE arrived 10.40am.
5th July EUNICE WHITE absent, sick. DORIS WHITE absent due to accident at the fire. Saturday evening saw a small gathering held here at the school; dancing was the main form of amusement; School Fund benefitted 2 pounds 3 shilling & 10 pence; donation of 5 shillings from J. CRABBE brought total to 2 pounds 8 shillings & 10 pence. DORIS WHITE absent all week with burnt legs.
19th July Admitted DAVID HUDSON (Infants) on Monday; enrolment 16, attendence 14.
24th July LAWRENCE WHITE punished at 10.35am; went home during recess and did not return. DORIS WHITE returned after 2 weeks’ absence.
31st July DAPHNE and DAVID HUDSON absent due to rain; received note in the afternoon from Mr. WHITE complaining about PHILIP SLEIGHT; four SLEIGHT children absent at 1pm roll call. Received note from Mrs. Sleight, to the effect that her children would not be attending until she is satisfied there is no more interference from Mr. WHITE. The teacher wrote: “I am endearouring to get to both families, pointing out that this was a family disagreement, not related to the school.
5th August Admitted SHIRLEY and ESME CARTER; former is 10, and has had only 1 year’s schooloing; the latter is 8, with only 1 week’s schooling. A successful dance was held in the school on Saturday with 2 pounds raised towards to cost of forming a tennis club. ROBERT WHITE and BARBARA SLEIGHT are away sick.
12th August It is believed the SLEIGHT family have measles. ESME CARTER and PHIL SLEIGHT are sick. ROBERT WHITE has an ulcerated throat,
15th August SYLVIA SLEIGHT sick; concern she may have measles – “This plague is present at Barton’s Mill, 4 mlies discent. Two CARTER children have croup.

Seating accommodation for 20 in 4 long desks, and very cramped; improvised with boxes, but need seats; dual desks have been requested; 3 boys in Junior VII need much more room. BRIAN O’NEILL to Std.I. Teacher suffering badly from rheumatism.
11th February Took 11 children in my car to Canning Mills for a cricket game; home team won 136 to 56. – “A most enjoyable match.”
18th March Return match cricket; Canning Mills won 99 to 27; their boys are much bigger, but our school team more confident. Some show promise of cricketing ability.
22nd April Admitted PETER MENZEL (6) from Leederville.
26th April Admitted MAVIS JOHNSON (13) from Barton’s Mill.
29th April Enrolment 27 – attendance 25.
16th May DAVID HUDSON living at Narrambeen. Enrolment 26 – attendance 22-24.

28th July BARBARA and BETTY HUTCHINSON sent home with bad ringworm on their bodies – home conditions are not good; COLIN HUTCHINSON mentioned.
9th September MAVIS JOHNSON left – over-age. Average enrolment = 28, attendance = 25.
29th September SHIRLEY CARTER left school – she turned 14 today.
11th October Workmen cemented leaking water tanks; they let out the water; if there is no rain there will be no drinking water for children.
16th October Splendid fall of rain this evening has put a few feet of water in the tanks, but leaking near the bottom, so water will probably be lost.
21st October More rain, but tanks leaking and are empty; workmen have not arrived to repair tanks.
27th October Tanks repaired; we have about 150 gallons of water.
25th November JOAN WILSON Std.VII of Meckering admitted on the 21st.
1st December Exams over; average of all subjects = 66%; all promoted; JOAN O’NEILL on trial in Std V; BARBARA WILLEY cannot read sufficiently to leave Infants. Her speech is difficult.
6th December After the repair, the tanks received 1200 gallons of water, but the cement affected the taste, so undrinkable and using mine, but now forced to request the children to bring their own.
9th December School Dentist, Mr McKENNA visited.
16th December For Quarter – Enrolment = 26; Attendance = 24; for Year – Enrolment = 27; Attendance = 24.
Teacher transferred to Clackline. School Funds = £9:4:0 in drawer of table.
Stock has been checked by JIM McKAY, a senior pupil.
“I have had endless trouble with the CARTER family regarding attendance. I should advise immediate ‘direct action’ as they seem expert at prevarication.” (Head Teacher).

7th June “I have received a further complaint, on this occasion from Mrs GIBBS, regarding the treatment of her daughter (Pam) at sewing. I have discussed the matter again with the sewing Mistress, pointing out that she must maintain a certain amount of discipline, but there is no need to deliberately hurt the feelings of small children. (Pam is 6 years old)” (Teacher)

12th July “ALAN WILLEY absent 3 days; this is the first occasion he has been absent during his school life. He was attacked by two other boys after school hours when bringing his cow home and has been in bed since. I have made inquiries in the matter as he alleges the boys (KEVIN & ALBERT McKAY) stated they attacked him because their mother urged them to do so. This seems reasonable as neither of these boys are of such a vicious type, and their mother (the sewing mistress by the way) had for some time past been informing me of the wickedness of ALAN WILLEY. I took what I considered appropriate action in the matter and again warned Mrs McKAY that she must not bring her quarrels with other people into the school.” (Teacher).

It is impossible for me to leave for manual with the boys; she is in the habit of gossiping with the girls about families’ private business. Last Tuesday she was unnecessarily rough spoken and in handling of BARBARA WILLEY; now I take her for raffia work and Manual with the boys; her parents complained, and took Barbara out of school. 14th February FAY GIBBS re-admitted; though liking Kent St. the child was fretting herself ill, so her parents brought her home again.
# March Tanks need repair; children bringing own water.
13th March Mr Box called to cancel order for apples as our school is not entitled to the concession; arranged with the Forestry for 100 gallons of water for school.
16th March Large number of planes flew over – 25 in first wave, then at least 15 a minute later.
17th March Above due to Air Pageant in Perth; over 100 planes took part.
Average attendance – 17. Forestry can’t cart water because they are fire-fighting.
31st March BRIAN COLLINS finished school, left district.
16th April ALAN BAMFORD gone to Fremantle.
May/June BILL O’BRIEN and ALAN SMAILES absent because of Mill holidays; BARRY CURTIS admitted from South Perth.
6th July Today I closed the school at 2:30 as my fiancé arrived home on “leave”.
1st August DICK STiRK admitted; CLAUDE returned.
9th August A gloom was cast over our little school today when it became known that Mr MERRIMAN, my predecessor, had passed away. We sent a card of condolence to his friends, Mr & Mrs PATTERSON of Maylands, from the children and teacher of Carinyah.
11th August BARRY CURTIS absent due to an accident.
6th October RON & PEGGY CURTIS admitted from Beaconsfield.
22nd October Sports Shield won by our school by a narrow margin. I wish the children’s school-work was as satisfactory as their sports. Their work is disappointedly slow.
23rd October At lunch-time I detained CLAUDE to correct his arithmetic with the result it was 12:20 when he had finished his work. Instead of returning to school, he was permitted to go joy-riding to the ‘tower” all the afternoon. Certainly not much encouragement to the teacher. From now onward, I cease to worry about him. I’ve been caused more anxiety and trouble from him, than the rest of the children added together. If his parents are not concerned with his future I fail to see why I should be caused so much inconvenience.
